The Search for Patagonia and the Rest of S. America

This section of the Journey promised to be the most enigmatic part of the adventure. Without a clear itinerary but taking in a variety of countries, climates and cultures; we didn't know what to expect. This was also the first time during the journey that we needed all of the specialised heating equipment that we have invested in. Yes, those jumpers are going to be useful. In fact we even had to buy a portable fan heater as we drove South.

Due to time constraints we set we had approximately six months on the continent, the primary aim is to explore Patagonia. We started in Ecuador and visited the Galapogas Islands and the Amazonian rain forest whilst waiting for Florence to arrive in Valparaiso. We then headed North to Bolivia and Paraguay first (to escape the winter chill) before turning East and then South to Tierra del Fuego towards the end of 2009.

Whilst at Ushuaia, we decided to take a last minute cruise to Antarctica before heading back to Uruaguay to ship home.

The route map below was our original plan (ish)...
